In my opinion, the best book Saramago has written. It might upset you if you're a fervourous catholic, but otherwise you'll experience a fine piece of art. Simply love it. Absolutelly brilliant. Flawless, surprising, genius.

Saramago challenges the good news of the four gospels by offering a fictitious story of how the story of the Messiah came about. Told from the third person, Jose Saramago challenges the codified story and metaphor of who Jesus of Nazareth was by irreverently conjuring a less holy story and offering a more historically and humanly rationale tale. Knowing Saramago being that of an Atheist, he shows kindness in not completely destroying the beauty of the both the Deity and the presence of religion while still forcing the reader to consider him as a writer and his work as a story and to enforce that understanding when considering the other stories valued as "Gospel" with the same consistency.
