Inspirational biography on a modern day saint who transcended the suffering and sin of modern existence and became closer to God through extreme humility and asceticism.

indispensible. The life of an American Orthodox monk who, having veered away from western Christianity as a youth (prior to his discovering Orthodoxy), went through the Nietzchean ringer, and ended up experiencing an existential clash between bohemian Taoism (studying under A. Watts @ the Academy of Asian Studies) and Traditional Taosim (edified by a healthy Guenonian streak). Disillusioned but seeking ardently, he came home to the bottomless well of Orthodox patristic teaching and praxis, in part through his divine mentor St. John Maximovich. A founding brother of the well-known St.-Herman-of-Alaska brotherhood, later tonsured monk, then ordained Hieromonk (founding Platina monastary, a veritable miracle of Optina tradition homegrown on American soil), Fr. Seraphim wrote many pertinent works dealing with todays most pressing issues head on, also translating the works of many Elders of the Russian thebaid Tradition. The book is very well written, doing justice to this 'mountain mover'.

I actually partially read this when I was living in community in SF. It is a wonderful book. I can't speak enough of it. I know the author, and I knew Fr. Seraphim's bottle washer, Fr. Herman. Fr. Seraphim has been a great source of comfort and strength for me in my conversion process.

A modern day 'Confessions', whether or not you see eye to eye with Fr. Seraphim on every theological issue one can not but help be moved by the intensity of his struggle for Truth, his longing for God's Kingdom and his suffering heart.

A great example of the transfigured life in Christ by an American convert...an example for those who truly are seeking to know God and desire to work out their salvation in Jesus Christ.

This book is amazing. Seraphim Rose did what few modern people have or will manage: he lived a truly Christian life in North America. This is a man who teaches a wise, humble, sober Christianity of the heart. Highly recommended for Orthodox Christians, Christians who seek depth and a real contemporary guide, or spiritual seekers of all walks.
