Once again, Osamu Tezuka has impressed me again. I don't think he'll ever cease to amaze me. I loved the medical drama, and the compelling storyline. In a way, this book hits upon racism and how people are so vain that they are willing to hate one another or even kill just because certain people don't reach other people's expectations and comfort zone.

Monmow disease is an interesting and visually compelling disease featured in this manga collection, and i think it is perfect for comics. Tezuka is a master storyteller, this book is evidence.

What better way to think about humanity, respect and human resilience through reading comics! Ode To Kirihito is a clever and intriguing story that told of a scary hypothetical disease that causes dog-like animal features in human. It was exciting to read of the interesting investigation and the struggle for a cure, at the same time the dark side of human nature through the complicated storyline. You gotta try reading this book.

A solid gekiga style work from Osamu Teuzka. With just the right amounts of religious overtone, social commentary, and fly by the seat plotting that the author is so good out, without a lot of negatives (no stupid sardonic jokes that cause the plot to nearly stand still). However, despite the welcome seriousness, tezuka's Phoenix series is still way better and that prevents this from getting the full 5 stars.

Dr. Osanai Kirihito travels to an isolated village to study the outbreak of a fatal disease that transforms its unlucky victims into doglike creatures. However, the villagers are less than friendly and soon Kirihito discovers how tenuous his place is as a doctor - and even a human being - when he too contracts the disease. The roles of medicine and morals were especially dear to Osamu Tezuka, who was a medical student before becoming a graphic artist, and his personal introspective further enriches and enlivens this work. Bizarre and unsettling, Ode to Kirihito is a terrifyingly original examination of what it means to be - or in the eyes of others, not be - human.
