If you can get past your uptight bums, this is a great book on the history of pooping, plumbing, and the socio-economic shaping of every single turd you've passed.
Fascinating. Seriously.

Although this book comes with the expected scatological humor for the subject matter it covers, I found the writing thoroughly researched and an excellent dialogue about the social, cultural, and psychological implications of a what is normally a disgusting topic. The research on what we spend as a society on waste management and the benefits of composting our own waste almost makes me want to start a compost pile in the backyard. I say almost because our neighbors are a little close and I suspect they would not appreciate it. But in all honestly, if I had an acre lot, I would totally do it. This is just one of the many areas that I found for fascinating reading.
