I'm not a big fan of Ryu Murakami. However this book was an exceptional exception. It's disturbing, it's creepy and yet it's very moving. The beauty of the world is revealed through its very ugliness.

One of the most depressing books I've ever read.. this is why I love Japanese writing. It's pinpoint detailed, harshly realistic and yet somehow dreamy in a sick way as well. Like Sartre and Camus and Irvine Welsh all combined, with that movement of prose that Japanese writers have. Delicious.

Never new Japan had a 60s drug trip era as well. Okay read if you like exotica, and drug-fueled story lines.

Me hace pensar en I vitelloni y en Trainspotting. El personaje central en estas tres obras, es parecido: siente el hastío de la vida que lleva y todo lo ve con cierta distancia.

Disgusting and mesmerizing. Screams to the senses and then just screams. p60-67 was some of the most captivating prose I have ever read. Kinda glad its all over though...!

It's been since Hubert Selby Jr's "Last Exit to Brooklyn" that I read such scalpel-cut crystal clear prose about the demi-monde that takes a perverse pleasure in making beauty tangible by depicting the ugly against which it contrasts and in which it originates (some of the scenes reminded me especially of 'The Queen Is Dead' chapter). The fact that Murakami does this by pitching magnificent mastery of style with utter nihilistic content is a wonderful feat! Don't know about the original Japanese version, but the English translation is of exceptional quality in style and language. The only thing where Selby, in my view, stands out most is that he doesn't need to be transcendental to achieve a vision of beauty, but makes a beauty tangible despite the *absence* of such higher clearer vision. Maybe it's a Japanese thing, but I'll have to read more RM to judge that.

Brilliant surrealist book about being young in the americanized japan of the 70s. Exciting, confusing and fascinating.
