This book explores a tale between a maid and her employer and the dynamics between them. An easy read, that one can pick and read slowly between other books. I liked the Gujarati phrases and references in there

Good story, but hard to keep track of the characters at first, due to the names and the jumping back and forth. And I guessed the big secret on page 69! Enjoyed it however. Maybe I have to say that because it was my bookclub pick!

Gorgeously imagined, this intimate and sensuous tale is fraught with tension, the human condition this author's specialty. It is impossible to imagine more frightening circumstances than those that Bhima must endure at her age, her heart broken by the people around her with their deceit, treachery, fallibility, and sheer humanity, each wound penetrating deeper and deeper. Throughout the course of the story, Bhima learns that none of the old rules, the old taboos, apply. Hers is a fragile existence, a world constructed of sand – shaky, ambiguous, and ultimately impermanent.

Pretty powerful, author really developed strong and interesting characters, and the climax was strong. Left me thinking about the book long after I read it.

I loved this woman's writing. Her characters are so vivid and moving. I enjoyed this story very much, but the ending could have been better. I can't wait to read another one of her books. She definitely has a way with words.

From the moment I picked up this book, I had a hard time putting it down. Umigar's attention to detail creates a stunning and accurate image of Mumbai. She does a remarkable job of portraying the intricate relationships between people, families, society, and their castes.

I really love the way that the characters are inter-woven. Umrigar does a great job of showing the humanity and cruelty that is present in all of us, despite our social standing.

Bhima is an illiterate old woman who lives with her granddaughter in the slums of Bombay. She works as a housemaid in a wealthy home headed by a widow named Sera. Over decades of employment Bhima and Sera have become friends who look out for each other's families. Bhima endures the drudgery of housework and the humiliation of servanthood (she is not allowed to sit on the furniture in Sera's house.) Sera, who has endured her own pain and unhappiness, comes to Bhima's aid with money or influence when needed. Eventually events conspire to make clear the boundaries and distance between them. Thrity Umrigar is a good story teller who takes you deep into Indian culture in this page-turner.
