I am proud to say i have actually read the whole thing twice. I bitterly disagree with the thesis and historical conclusions, but it is a foundational work, especially for social studies analysis. It is also fun to quote from-

If you want to understand what's taking place in the world today, you could do worse than to begin with Karl Marx's magnum opus. According to Marx, all the economic relations obtaining between people are species of the value relation. For this reason he begins his critique of political economy with an examination of the phenomenon of value. He finds this phenomenon to be composed of contradictory elements, which gives rise to the necessity for money in addition to commodity. Each of the subsequent relationships he investigates is a species of the value relation: wages are the value of labor-power, surplus-value is an increment of value over that paid out in wages, capital is a value relation between capitalist and worker, profit and rent are portions of surplus-value, etc. This book provides you with the anatomy of production and offers the key to the entirety of the capitalist economy. However, it is more than a work of political economy. By unveiling the secrets at work in the production and reproduction of our modern way of life, it is an unparalleled product of human self-consciousness. It is the starting place for reflection upon the contemporary era - and the pathway to transcending it.

His description of embodied labor as being akin to an amorphous substance inhabiting commodities is probably the only psychedelic moment in this behemoth. But it was worth the read. Also the occasional jabs at organized religion (sorry catholics) are priceless. Thanks Marx. Even if you were a little too zealous in your perception of historical inevitability.

But seriously, couldn't this book have been like 300-400 pages shorter and still gotten your points across? Still, props for quoting Smith all the time so I can tell Marx haters that you likely knew Smith's theories far more intimately than they do.
