Rowling's rather wordy tale of Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts. Once again (believe it or not!) Harry's in trouble--someone has entered him in the Triwizard Tournament--the wixarding competition that puts contestants through three vigourous, extremely dangerous tasks, with possible deadly results. Since no one under the age of 17 is allowed to enter it (and yet he still ends up competing) it's quite obvious someone has it in for Harry (surprised, anyone?) As Harry narrowly avoids death in the first two tasks, breathe no sigh of relief once he enters the third and final task. Everything the book has been building towards is revealed in the final climatic scene as You-know-who returns in a freakish reincarnation ceromony. The very end takes a dark turn, darker than any of the other three books, as Rowling kills her first innocent. And you're there to read every painful word.

I was drawn into the Harry Potter series by the light-hearted, magical world J.K. Rowling created around the students of Hogwarts School or Witchcraft and Wizardry. The first three books were heavy on school activities, light on the dark, horrible world of Voldemort and plentiful with the fun, magical moments that made me fall in love with Harry, Ron and Hermione. The third book was by far, my favorite of the series thusfar. The fourth book was considerably darker than any of the others and as a result, I enjoyed it less than I did the first three. It’s very interesting to see the books becoming more mature as the characters and readers age. I’m finding that I don’t really like Harry Potter or his attitude and keep on reading for Ron, Fred and George. I also can’t help but feel that Ron and Hermione would (will) be the perfect couple. I’m confident that they’ll end up together in the end.

Probably should not have read it after watching the movie, although was curious why everybody was so engrossed in these books that they would finish in a few sittings. Gave it try -- was looking forward to the 'outstanding detail' people rave about -- but frankly, was quite bored. Probably should have started with book 1, but I didn't feel all that behind since I saw the films. Still, I applaud her creativity, which is undeniable, in all the vocabulary and characters she created. We can't forget to not take that for granted (triple negs!)

And now the series grows darker. This is forshadowed in both the length (twice as long as the previous ones) and the color scheme of the cover (more muted and darker), as well as the first chapter, and this promise is more than fulfilled. The book opens with a murder and the news of another, and several more deaths ensue before the end, one hitting especially close to home. I would say that from this point on, the series is definitely not intended for children. More for the teenage crowd (which, in all fairness, the readers who had started with the start of the series would be by this point). A good book, and I haven't much to add to my critique of the series other than the growing darkness--which, read my text, I DO NOT object to. It is my opinion (held by others as well) that great darkness or evil allows great good to shine all the brighter in comparison. The Lord Of The Rings is nothing without the growing threat of the Dark Lord Sauron, likewise Harry Potter is nothing without the growing threat of the evil Lord Voldemort. I am always a fan of a series featuring an epic showdown between good and evil. I am still having a hard time restraining myself from binging.....

When Harry Potter first came out and a friend gave me the book to read I could not put it down, I was hooked. The first book of the series took me two days to read. There is nothing like curling up in your favorite chair and adventuring through the pages of a book . . ....You never know where you might wind up. . . .The Harry Potter collection brought out the mystical child in me. They re~opened my imagination and belief that anything is possible. They took me to places I always wanted to go and with the magical tools I only used in my dreams.

This is another one of my favorite books in the Harry Potter series. I love how nobody believes Harry and yet, instead of lying, he tells the truth. He didn't put his name in the Goblet of Fire. I thought Voldemort seemed kind of weak though. I mean, he doesn't seem really scary or powerful, for that matter.

so much fun! the first fatty, it definitely proved Rowling could write something so utterly riveting. she perfectly intertwines competition, love, hate, death and fun into one book that makes you realize how serious things will get. plus she also shows how freakin' good she is at planting things early that will pay off later
the first fatty, i fell in love with the characters in this. this was such a treat to read, because it was incredible fun and games the same time that the most awful thing that could possiby happen actually happens. i cried so long when cedric died, and the ending line still gives me chills

Harry Potter get's boosted into turbo overdrive, making 'Goblet of Fire' my favorite of the saga for years!!! Just when I thought I liked Harry's world exactly the way it is, JK Rowling takes everything I love about Potter and super-sizes it to spectacular proportions. Dragon eggs? That's old school - lets have REAL DRAGONS!! Quidditch House Cup? Boring! Enter Quidditch WORLD Cup!!! Inter-house competitions? No!!! A Death-defying Multiple School encompassing Triwizard Tournament!!! And more and more and more... it's no wonder the book is more than twice the size of Harry's first tale. And to top it all off, J.K. ends 'Goblet' with such a dark, semi-horrific spin there's no telling what she could put Harry through next time!

Okay, this book turned another angle. But I just wondered, why would that what's-his-name impersonating Moody not attack Harry first, until the Finals of the Triwizard Tournament, when Voldemort reborned. I don't like Krum one bit either, it appears he fell for Hoermione. And Rita Skeeter was way too interfering in whoever's business, just that I wished she could have a slight mention in other books before so it didn't seem like she was a newcomer journalist or soemthing, because she's not. And the challenges seemed dangerous, but (oh I just remembered) JK Rowling could have touched more on the vagueness of who set the Dark Mark (which Barty Crouch the Junior did) and hurray! Dobby-the-elf-with-bat-like-ears is back! Poor elf (was it Jinky or soemthing?), being sent clothes just because she was afraid of heights and that she loosen the spell that binded her and that Barty Crouch the Junior. Really. That's abuse of elf. I totally understand Hermione's stand. The badges...too overboard.

This has to be right behing the hallows in my opinion, but as if you could really rate the greatness of the HP books is beyond me. But what a wonderful way to intoduce the rest of the wizarding world with a quidditch world cup, but then to have that come crashing down at the end with the attack by the deat eaters really gives you that sense of excitement and danger fromt the very start of the book. The Tri wizard tourney also lets you see some of the other magical students and people outside the world of hogwarts. Through out you get introduced to a realm of characters that grab you from the start, moody, rita skeeter, and even barty crouch. Not sure why Ludo bagman never made it into the movie, or winky the crouches house elf. Let's not forget the ultimate surprise the return of the dark lord and his non stop hatred for our beloved hero, you get a first hand glance at his power and hatred for love and anything that might make the prophecy to be fullfilled

Since pretty much everyone I know has read these books, I figure reviewing them is pretty pointless. But with the new book coming out in a couple of weeks, I have to go through them beginning to end. To make the reviews more entertaining, I will be doing them in a variety of unexpected formats. For this review, I will be writing as play-by-play color commentary.

TYCHO: Good evening and welcome one and all to another great Harry Potter match! I'll be your commentator tonight...

MSHADES: And so will I as we see if the Boy Wizard, the Prince of Prestidigitation, the Bolt from the Blue, your favorite and mine, HARRY POTTER can win out another battle against the Vile, the Vermiform, the Virulently Vindictive Viscount of Villainy, LORD VOLDEMORT!

TYCHO: Careful with that name there, M....

(SFX: Bell)

TYCHO: And it's round one - Potter fakes behind Mr. Dursley, dodges Dudley and oh! He's down! He's holding his head!

MSHADES: Looks like his old wound is playing up there! As longtime fans know, he was wounded in his first-ever match against Voldemort, which he won on a technicality, but it's bothered him before. Boy, that looks like it really stings, doesn't it?

TYCHO: You bet, I wonder how - it's the Weasleys! The Weasleys in for the save and Dudley is down! And Potter has managed to make his way out of the Dursley stage of this summer's match-up!

MSHADES: Good thing those Weasleys showed up, too, I was beginning to worry for Harry's safety there....

TYCHO: No need to worry - he's been successful in getting out of the Dursley Formation before, though if you remember last year it took some doing.

MSHADES: You bet it did - a lot of people were predicting the end of his winning streak there. Lucky for him he managed to squeak by. Think he'll have the same luck this time?
TYCHO: That's the thing about this game, M - you never know what's going to happen. But let's get back to the action! Potter gets a quick time out and a little Quidditch action. These lulls in the game are few and far between, so I hope Potter is able to HOLY COW it's a Death Eater! Death Eaters in a shocking play from Lord Voldemort, who has so far managed to keep himself safely out of the offensive lines. This is, this is just shocking.

MSHADES: Absolutely shocking indeed. Voldemort is sticking to his usual strategy - send out the foot soldiers while he stays safe behind heavy defense. I'll tell you, that kind of strategy is great for keeping yourself from being scored on too often, but it's no way to win a game.

TYCHO: You're absolutely right there. Voldemort will have no chance of winning this thing unless he makes a bold move, and this showing by the Death Eaters might just be the beginning. Let's get back to the match - I see we've moved venues back to Harry's old stomping grounds, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - here there is no doubt that he'll have the home field advantage.

MSHADES: That's right, so far in his matches against Voldemort, Potter is two-and-oh while on his home field. He knows Hogwarts like the back of his hand, and he has an excellent team there to back him up.

TYCHO: Speaking of which, let's take a look at the lineup for tonight - we have that usual starters, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, with Dumbledore playing defense and - wait, it looks like there' s been a change in the lineup from last time - Mad-Eye Mooney, a recently signed player has moved into defensive point. He looks a little... unconventional, but with the loss of both Sirius Black and Remus Lupin from last season he'll have his work cut out for him.

MSHADES: Indeed he will, although I have it on good authority that Black still has ties with the franchise and is available to substitute if necessary. We'll see - at this moment, it's anybody's game!

(SFX: bell)

TYCHO: And it's round two! Potter, Granger and Weasely are moving into standard formation, and - wait! Wait! This isn't the standard formation! It looks like... are they doing....?

MSHADES: I think they are! It looks like they're going for the TriWizard play! A risky one, that, one that no one has pulled off in years! This will, of course, require them to bring in extra players. And here they come now, from the French and German leagues! Good luck to them all - I have to admit, Voldemort will have to do some quick thinking to get ahead of this one, won't he?

TYCHO: Indeed he will, but looking over at the Coach's table he doesn't seem to be too bothered. Wait, there's some action down on the field - the referees seem to be arguing about the rules, it looks like we have an extra player - it's Potter! Potter is in the TriWizard formation! That's a clear violation of the rules of the play, isn't it?

MSHADES: It sure is - the rules say that there can be only one player from each league - there'll be hell to pay when we find out who got Potter in there. But it looks like.... yes, the referee is signaling that there can be no changes made at this time. So it looks like it'll be Delacour, Krum, Diggory and Potter!

TYCHO: I'm noticing some action over on the Hogwarts team, here. It looks like Potter and Weasley are - no, no, they're fine. False alarm there. Let's move on to the action! And the first TriWizard play has started - dragons! Some nice moves from the French and German teams... oh, that looked like it hurt! I hope Diggory's luck improves! And now Potter.... Potter swoops down.... and he scores! That's excellent work from the Hogwarts team!

MSHADES: It seems that Team Voldemort is using this time off to do some conferencing. I can't tell who all the players are - Voldemort's contract with the League unfortunately allows his players some measure of anonymity, but unless I'm mistaken there's a silver-haired devil in that group....

TYCHO: If you're accusing Lucius Malfoy of what I think you are, I suggest you refrain from such wild speculation if you know what's good for you - he's a famous player of Hardball and I don't want to be anywhere near you if he comes looking for you after the match.

MSHADES: I wouldn't worry too much about it. He's a stuck-up little gi - OH! Granger and Krum pull off a double play against Potter and Weasley! That kind of team infighting will probably cost them points in the long run. Shame on Miss Granger for such behavior! But then she's always been one of the more unpredictable members of the team.

TYCHO: Yes, she has, but her contributions are overwhelmingly positive in the long run.... Okay, moving on - Potter to Granger, back to Potter to Hagrid - HAGRID FUMBLES! You'd think someone that big would be able to hold on a little better!

MSHADES: Well if the captain of the French team wasn't interfering I'm sure he would.

TYCHO: I'm not sure that's it... the referees are talking and... Rita Skeeter gets a yellow card!

MSHADES: Skeeter? Here? Where's she been hiding, I never even saw her on the field!

TYCHO: Well that's her usual play, isn't it - show up where you least expect it. And now on to the swimming competition.... They're off!

MSHADES: Oh! What on Earth has Krum done to his head?

TYCHO: He appears to have changed it into a shark! Not sure what good that'll do him, but... Delacour is out of the water! She's missed the goal and she's out of the water! This will cost France dearly. And here comes Potter and Diggory - both with overtime penalties. Too bad, but now Potter and Diggory are tied for the lead!

MSHADES: And over on Team Voldemort we seem to have some action - more players are being called off the bench and put into play, at least one of them seems to be lurking over near Hogwarts territory - we're likely to see some interference before too long unless Dumbledore can rally his defenses to... wait, what's going on with Mooney?

TYCHO: I don't know - he's making some strange plays out there, not what you would expect from the defensive team. Dumbledore had better rein him in, but he doesn't even seem to notice!

MSHADES: There's a lot of talk about keeping Dumbledore on defense, actually. He's done fine work in the past, but there's some talk around the office that he might be let go as early as next season, maybe the one after that. Only time will tell on that one, right?

TYCHO: That's right. Now we're moving into the third round of the TriWizard play - it looks like a fairly complex series of plays going on here, but the winner of this stage of play takes home the cup and the glory! They're all in now, Potter and Diggory have the lead... wait, it looks like Team Voldemort is finally making its move - we have one of their players on the field.... Delacour is out! And now - Krum! Krum is out! This is amazing, have you ever seen play this vicious!

MSHADES: No, no I haven't, and let me tell you I'm thrilled to finally see some new moves on the field! It looks like Team Voldemort has finally decided to join the game as we go into round three with Potter and Diggory tied for first.

(SFX: bell)

TYCHO: And we're in round three of Potter versus Volde - DIGGORY'S DOWN! My god, that was fast!

MSHADES: That was Voldemort showing his classic "No Mercy" play, one he's been holding off on until now. It looks like, after three seasons ol' Voldy is finally ready to start being serious. And Potter is up against some heavy offense here - Team Voldemort has effectively isolated the Boy Wizard from his defensive line and they look ready to just run him over. I'd have to say this game is all sewn up, wouldn't you?
TYCHO: Absolutely. This is classic Voldemort - let the other team wear itself out, separate people from the defense and just knock 'em out. It looks like Potter is going to see the end of his three-zero shutout against.... wait, what is this! It's.... I never thought I would see this kind of play as long as I lived! It's the Wand-on-Wand Power Play!

MSHADES: I had no idea this would happen, none at all. This play gives Potter extra minutes on the clock and some defense off the bench to give him time to escape Team Voldemort's offensive line. And.... POTTER CLEARS IT! Potter weaves around Pettigrew, dodges Voldemort, evades Voldemort's ENTIRE OFFENSIVE LINE and returns to Team Hogwarts territory! That was amazing! This is a play that will go down in history, ladies and gentlemen and you can say you saw it here!

(SFX: whistle)

TYCHO: And that's the game! Another amazing match between two formidable captains, Potter and Voldemort.

MSHADES: Indeed it was, a fantastic match that blew away all expectations. The scorekeepers are calling this a draw - there's been points gained and lost on both sides, and now both teams will take a break to strategize. I reckon Potter is going to need to beef up both his offensive and defensive lines if he wants to have a chance next season.

TYCHO: Absolutely. Looking back, I'd say he had a lot of luck in the last few seasons, but this match proved that luck can only take you so far. Now we need some more brains and brawn in equal measure.

MSHADES: If I had to guess, I'd say that the next season will hold even more surprises. Until then, I'm MShades....

TYCHO: And I'm Tycho, and we'll see you next time...

Words cannot do justice to this fine work as the ultimate turning point in the series. It has masterfully transitioned from innocent children's fantasy to a mature story of a young hero trying to do what is right and live at the same time. There are many shocking and certainly frightening scenes which will could scare children. I think its safe to say this is definitely NOT a children's series. But the book's strongest suit is the focus on human relationships and how the characters constantly evolve as they mature through adolescence. Budding romance might wear down any other series but it is certainly not tacked on. The romantic angles are true and very well-written in that they are not totally resolved because it has been kept in mind that this is a continuing story. I like to call this the first act of the "war" section of the HP series and it will have readers begging for the next chapter.

In the 4th installment, Harry is once again at Hogwarts. And once again we enter the wonderful world of J.K.Rowling who has penned a darker story than in the past. But it is laced with humor as well, which makes it even better than the previous books. Bringing in International wizards was a stroke of genius-gives the world a richer feel to it. The tasks that Harry must perform kept me cheering him on-even though I knew he would figure it out-seeing how he did it was amazing. And He Who Must Not Be Named finallly makes an appearance and oh what a horrible appearance it was! Rowling's description of him sent chills up my spine.
All in all a great read for any fantasy fan. If you love Tolkien you will love the Harry Potter books.
Some have told me she used devices that Tolkien employed. I see some inklings of Tolkien but that is the best form of flattery. I am sure Professor Tolkien would love these stories too.

An absolutely brilliant tribute to the rest of the Harry Potter series. However, it is quite different. Then again, different is good.

In the book summary on the inside cover, "Goblet of Fire" was described as "pivotal." I can think of no better word to describe it. As the middle point of the book series, it is definitly a turning point, with plenty of changes. Still retaining the original magic that enchanted so many, this book contains more adult humor, utter terror, a bit of romance, and the most utter heart-wrenchings than I've seen in the other books. It is absolutely brilliant.

Harry is now 14, and certainly acts like it. He and Ron have discovered girls, which leads to some pretty hilarious scenes. There is also a dream come true: a trip to a professional Quidditch Tournament. And at Hogwarts, a special event has been set up for the school year involving two other schools: a tournament (to bridge relationships and understanding between wizards, ect.) And, most importantly, there are rumors that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named shall rise again...

"Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" is a must-read! It is full of the excitement and adventure we've come to appreciate. Still, Rowling is aging her books along with Harry, so this one may not be as suitable for little children as the original. There is a particularly scary chapter. Unlike the predesscors, this book ends on a more fearful note. A more serious note is taken on, and the end is powerful, beautiful, well-written, but a sad tear-jerker. And Harry IS growing up. But overall, the book is excellent!

Incredibly boring for the majority of the book. There were too many pages for such a simple plot. The only thing that intrigued me was the plot twist of Mad Eye. I totally did not see that coming, but as a new Harry Potter reader, I guess that can be expected. Overall, Rowling put too many side details in here just to say she had an extremely long [boring] book. Even the part with Voldemort was awkward and silly. The dialogue is pretty bad. Read it for yourself and make your own opinions, but this is mine. Thanks ;)

Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them. * Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it. * Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge. * Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

The pivotal turning point (double adjective?) in the Harry Potter series. Epic. Good story. Intrigue. Most importantly, fun to read. From what I understand, it was after this book was published that Harry Potter truly became a phenomenon. I'm sure it had something to do with this book specifically. Anyway, this book was the one that got ME hooked on Harry. It will always be one of my most favourite books, if not THE favourite, period. IMPORTANT NOTE: I almost didn't finish reading this book. Why? The beginning - for me, the start seemed like a bit of a drag to read through - as I was reading I thought is this book going anywhere? (!) I stopped reading after I finished the chapter before the Triwizard Tournament. Later I picked up this book again, and began reading where I had left off. I'm glad I did! Boy was I ever blown away...I was hooked on Harry from then on - I can't believe I came that close to not finishing the Harry Potter series. So just a warning for first time readers: if you're having trouble with the beginning of this book, keep on reading! It'll get better. That's the ironic thing about this book. When I started reading it, I thought this book is a drag - then when I had finished, it was one of my all time favourites. Strange. Anyway - I'm not saying that the beginning of this book was or wasn't good - I'm just saying that for some reason me, myself and I found it to be a drag. Can't put my finger on why. Just my own perception...but if anyone else has this problem - keep on reading!

This is a long book filled with exciting new adventures like the Triwizard Tournament, but also some sad scenes where I burst in tears while reading at a coffee shop. Although at moments dull and routine, I definately maintained interested to read on. I was shocked at the appropriate parts of surprises including goblet of fire names and the teacher at Hogwarts who was working for Voldemort - overall great buildup and great plot! I was very sad about one of the Champions and cried when Harry was battling Lord Voldemort. I am so proud of Harry and how courageous he is! This book is a necessary plot builder for the books to come - I can't believe Voldemort is back and I am excited and scared for the next three books. I hope to see more romantic tension between Ron and Hermione and I can't wait until Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle get their asses kicked!

the fourth book in the series, and behind book 7, probably the most action-packed. there is a lot packed into these pages. we get a lot of valuable background info on Tom Riddle, in addition to seeing his return to power. we are introduced to several new and significant characters, including Krum, Cho, Rita Skeeta, Moody, Fleur, and the elder Weasley brothers. another winning element of the book is the budding romance of several characters. and it couldn't just be "boy meets girl" either - love triangles for everyone! because we know Harry needs more conflict in his life. and anyone over 25 can probably look back with fondness on the joys and pains of young love.the book follows the Rowling cookie cutter model that works so well - introduce conflict, then build it to the end of the school year climax. and it is this climax that makes the book a winner. after being on the edge of your seat through all the challenges, you are lulled into a false sense of security. the last challenge is over, right? not quite. the action has only begun. Rowling does a great job throwing in dead ends and surprises - the faithful servant at Hogwarts as just an example. this is a great work of fiction - probably not for small children at all, more a work of teen fiction due to the subject matter and dark overtones. but the character development, plot, and action are top knotch. a great read for anyone, Potter fan or otherwise.

I have to begin by saying: J.K. Rowling-- you are a writing GODDESS. Your style is brilliant; I can literally tell that you are getting in character as you write. When you wrote the first three books, I was hypnotized by the playful yet insightful childlike thoughts. Now, as your orphan hero and his friends Hermione and Ron are entering the oh-so-joyous years of adolescence, I can feel the tone change. That is really saying something about your writing.

New year at Hogwarts. New challenges-- this time, complete with a triwizard tournament! I absolutely love this book for all of the memorable things it contained-- the Yule Ball and the visions of the past just to name a few. Following the tradition of Harry Potter, expect this book to be full of twists and turns at every moment.

The entire harry potter series is massively overrated and somehow ridiculously popular despite its shortcomings. The series is not bad, but not excellent. Decent writing, a somewhat compelling plot, to be honest this book is just plain normal: nothing outstanding, nothing terrible.

A fantastic tone undrlying a plot that, while interesting, lacks the gripping quality to of truly well-written fantasy. What keeps the reader close, in fact, is the simple oddness of it, the strange creatures, the weird setting, everything is absolutely out of the ordinary. Rowling's characters are somewhat two-dimensional, portrayed without a true understanding of youth as innocent young students. They lack a certain gritty reality, they are comic book teens.

In short this book is mildly entertaining and clearly aimed at a younger audience who may appreciate its style more fully. Read it, but don't get your hopes up.
