Neal Stephenson is an absolute genius. Who else could come up with a character like Half-cocked Jack (don't call me a vagabond) Shaftoe? I am in love with Eliza!

I love history & I love historical novels. The Baroque Cycle is simply the FINEST of the historical novel genre. The sheer volume of historically accurate material seamlessly woven into the fictional storyline is unbelievable. In addition, is is loaded with philosophy, mathematics and science dating from the period of the novels (17th & 18th centuries). The masterful storyline and attention to detail is breathtaking.

Okay, this is where Stephenson's Baroque Cycle gets good. Its part swashbuckling-adventure on the high seas, part political intrigue in the royal courts of 19th century Europe, and all witty historical fiction. Can't wait to read the next one.

After 8 months of trying to finish this book I gave up.
I bought it because it was very thick with small type and hoped it would take me more than a couple of days to finish. I started it at the end of August and I'm still plodding on...

This series was not Stephenson's best. The science background was interesting, but the books were so poorly paced that it was difficult to stay with them.

I am not a reader of historical novels, however, I found the entire Baroque Cycle series to be a wonderful fun read. There is quite a bit of humor which I wasn't really expecting. Neal Stephenson is an amazing writer for many reasons, but I was astounded at how he linked characters and events across three enormous books.

Worth it for Jack's story alone; much easier to get into than Vol 1 and somewhat easier to digest than Vol 3.
