I'm sure this is a great classic read-but it disturbed me in the first few chapters-so I quit reading-may pick up again later-but I doubt it. I mean it REALLY disturbed me!

I felt that this was a very good book; definitely will keep you on edge to the very end. Tells about a black man in a very compromising situation and the measures he takes to protect his secrets.

My bishop said I shouldn't read books that made me question my faith. This one made me ask questions that church officials couldn't answer. Be careful. Proceed with caution.

While only about a third of the way through I can honestly say that this book is a true page turner. A little more gruesome than I expected but I look forward to seeing how it ends.

A difficult, but compelling read about the coming of age of a Black man in the late 1930s.
Halfway through and not an easy read. I intend to finish it...depressing.

This book was my most thrilling experience after Middlesex. I love it even better than Beloved and The Bluest Eye. Oppressor and the Opressed, the hypocrisy of justice, pop culture, it sheds light on the gravest issues men desperately need to address.
My only reservation is Max's "all too long" speech. But it should not simply be labeled as propaganda, as Max is NOT a communist – thought he makes the “Marxist” mistake, namely, dissolving individuality into class consciousness. Is anyone sympathetic to the reds simply a terrorist of sorts? It’s sick when critical intelligence turns against itself and deconstructs the foundation – After all, are all calls for justice simply propaganda?
OK, it was a banned book in the US. And Wright was a Red. I want to teach this book really, but alas, even in a free country, I have my own fear as well…

I had a very difficult time getting through this book, since it is virtually impossible to relate, even a tiny bit, to the main character. Every time I read, I walked away in a bad mood. I was relieved that toward the end of the book I began to feel a human side of the main character, but glad I am done!

While it's difficult to appreciate a character like Bigger Thomas, the idea of the African American struggle to become equal in society is blatantly spelled out and felt. Beautifully written for such a disturbing story.

Although it loses something in the final third, it's still one of those books that changed the way I look at things.

This too is a book from a specific time in my life that probably changed me completely. Each time I began to read it, in my room, I played the Beatles "Rarities" album. I still associate the horror and injustice and misunderstanding of this book with that music, which was a little "off" too.

Provocative time capsule, but Part III is more like a sermon than a story.

This is the only book that has ever made me cry. Amazing, heart-breaking and the symbolism is discreet and in-your-face at the same time.

I expected Native Son to be a social commentary on racism in 1940's America, and it was. But, in some ways it was not the novel I was expecting. After a somewhat predictable, start the novel took a bit of an unexpected turn and I found it to be an involving, suspenseful read. The protagonist, Bigger Thomas, is a poor, uneducated black man who hates the whites for being in control and is ashamed of his family’s poverty. He is always getting into trouble and soon Bigger must make some monumental decisions. At first I sympathized just a bit with Bigger as he chooses a path of deception, but his crimes soon escalate until I had no sympathy for the main character. Bigger redeems himself slightly at the end of the novel, when he must confront his own actions and determine where social conditioning ends and free will begins. Unfortunately, instead of relying on the plot alone to make a statement about how racial inequality and social injustice create conditions for violence in urban America, the author gets a bit preachy via the final statement of a Jewish lawyer who is affiliated with the Communist Party. This portion of the tale really drags down an otherwise gripping and insightful novel. I would recommend Native Son but would not blame you for skimming over a bit of the overlong courtroom speech.
