I bought this book as an 11 year old at a church rummage sale. The cover was torn, it smelled funny, but something drew me to it. I would have to say that this one book completely changed how I looked at casual reading. I fell in love with the writings of Leon Uris - and to this day am drawn to reading historical fiction more than any other genre.

So incredible! It took me a summer to read it, but the stories of each character were so engrossing that it took time to absorb all of the details.

Probably a little biased considering Uris was Jewish BUT... The story of Isreal is truly inspiring. The Jews were out-manned and out-weaponed but through intelligence, determination and force of will, they remade the land and fought for what they felt fair. The fact that human beings really can work together to create something bigger than themselves gives me hope for my children's future.

the literary equivalent to watching ben hur or even the ten commandments (am speaking more about the emotional intensity and scale of the project rather than the cultural and subjective similarities) one word: wow
