An amazing book. It will rekindle your belief in the power of the written word. Zafon transports you back in time to post-war Barcelona, and you might never want to leave.

A story of how a book, or the investigation of a book, entwines with the life of a young reader and eventually reshapes both his life and the life of the book's author.

The characters and relationships in this book are lovely and alive. The depiction of Barcelona during the reign of the facists is also absorbing and interesting. And then behind it all is a story with twists and turns and heros, lovers and villains. This was a fun read.

I needed to buy a second book at Border's to take advantage of the "buy one get one at half price" deal. I found this book and it looked intriguing. Little did I know that I would lose sleep reading late into the night! I love books with stories and literature at the heart of them. This one has it all since it is also an epic gothic mystery! Very different and very addicting. I guess I should look for more books by the author but I'm almost afraid to. :p

There are not many books that you read, that when you finish, you think "I'll remember this book always". This is one of them.

I have to be honest, the first half (maybe even more) I was having a lot of trouble getting into it and felt it was just taking me SO long to read. But, I realized that it was because it was so beautifully written, I wanted to read EVERY word, and soak them in (I'm a skimmer always). It literally took me over a month to read. (I usually can read 2 books in a week!).

This book shows the importance of family, friends, the written word, and how life really does come full circle. It's about learning from your mistakes and learning from others. It's about LOVING and cherishing what you have in life and not taking things for granted. There is so much emotion that comes through the pages, you can't help but become the characters. You feel you are actually living their life and THAT is what a great piece of literature is all about.
