One of the greatest books ever written, and perhaps the greatest book ever written about the South. It is entertaining and even enchanting while still providing an honest look at small town rural southern life during the Great Depression. One sees the ignorance, the classism and especially the racism and provides an understanding about those who suffered under them, and those who rose above them.

A superb story which best describes the real world. Atticus is a superb dad and Jem and Scout rocking. So is Boo Radley. Each and every character in this book has got a real role. In author's own language, 'if we walk around in their shoes', we feel they are alright. But when walking around in my shoes, I feel like giving Aunt Alexandra one good kick.

This book is incredible. I encourage everyone to read, or reread this book if you have not paged through it since highschool. The book covers several issues from race and injustice, to growing apart for your maturing siblings then having incidents out of your control bring you back together. I hope you read and enjoy.
Turns out this is the numebr 1 book all adults should read before they die...So far it is pretty good, we will see at the end if that statement is really true.

A story told by a little girl who is a lot more insightful than the reader can believe, this book is a reminder of all the evils of society. And even while Lee explains these at length, she showcases hope for improvement: personified by Atticus Finch. The story might be told by Scout, and Jem and Dill may be the active characters; but to me, Atticus is the hero. Atticus is the one who teaches his children to read, think, understand, tolerate, be patient, and above all, he lovingly coaxes them to reason!
Scout keeps asking innocent questions, which I think is Lee's way of making an adult think. Often, the most basic questions baffle the wisest and most learned. While answering Scout's questions, Atticus is not only telling her his own perceptions, but he is also teaching her to think and build up her own. Apart from major issues like equality and justice, Atticus also gently explains to her the importance of personal space. He teaches her to let Jem be alone when he needs to think and figure things out for himself. The fact that Jem becomes so upset over Tom Robinson's case, is a declaration of his support for his father not only in the case, but also in his thinking.
Atticus has made his children young adults who are getting ready to battle the cankers of society and not just passively watch them destroy honest and innocent people. It's a simple story told with so much more meaning to it than is initially apparent. A great read for every reader. (Non-readers please don't bother with this. Your unimaginative minds cannot deal with this sort of brilliance!)

This is probably my favorite book, though I have not read it in a while. No other book has been able to capture my emotions the way this one did. The story itself has immense emotional beauty and moral significance. Watching the movie adaptation with Gregory Peck makes me cry every time at the end (note, this is not a sad book). I look forward to a re-read soon but highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a powerful reading experience.

A short story that examines how love within a family and between neighbours of different races can survive in a time when apartheid was deep-seated and prevalent in the american society. Most of my friends hated it, though. "Too dry", as they put it. But I'd still encourage everyone who sees homo sapiens as a single species (the human race) to read it. The words used may be incomprehensible to some, but that is one of the major draws of the book: it feels like it is written in an era long gone. Old, dusty and a classic.

Such a great story, I can't believe I didn't read it until now. So charming and heart wrenching in certain parts, and a reminder that we can be cruel to others based on our insecurities and pride.

A life changing read. An interesting bit of trivia for those who know the book, the character "Dill" is based on Truman Capote, who was a friend of Harper Lee. He spent summers with an aunt in Harper Lee's home town.

Aside from reflecting the history of the U.S during the '30s, the conflict between the Ku Klux Klan mentality and the way in which Afro Americans were seen, Harper Lee's book should be obligatory lecture in kindergarten, school, high-school and college worldwide.
As children we are more open to the world with its bad and good parts, distinguish better the right from wrong and are more willing to tolerate and understand.
As kids, we don't rush in to judge without seeing for ourselves, and our ego hasn't gone through the roof, our pride not vanity.
Childhood is the perfect time to make friends and to cherish them, the perfect time to appreciate what we have been granted.
When was the last time you looked to the essence rather than the aspect of something?
When did you look in the soul rather than to the skin colour or someone's disability and stop judging him for what is told about him and instead appreciating what he has done?
