Can see why people are drawn to stories like this one. But I just could not grasp the personal philosophy of the author. She seemed to be all over the place (literally and figuratively), and from the first few chapters that I did read, I got the feeling that this was nothing more than a glorified diary.

Nicely paced & well-written chick-lit/bio with some laugh aloud lines and a serve of moral fibre too. I got a vague 'coulda been me' feeling from reading about this ex-SPIN writer's self-imposed exodus from New York.

My new life manual!! (Bible is still #1 and always will be!) The insights, experiences, choices, and lessons-learned offered in this amazing book helped me dump some "much-needed, deserving-to-be-dumped, long-overdue" baggage! Thank you, Elizabeth Gilbert! Not going back there ever!!

The appeal of Gilbert's memoir is obvious. Having reached a certain age, marital state, and socioeconomic position, she comes to herself one night weeping on the bathroom floor wondering why the hell exactly she's so miserable. To figure it out, she takes a journey - literal and metaphorical - exploring the different options life and the world have to offer. Frankly, I vote for the Italian and hot language teachers, but Gilbert manages to make the appeal of each approach understandable. (And that's saying something, when the middle bit takes place in an ashram where multihour silent meditation sessions are de rigueur.) If there's one complaint to be made about Eat, Pray, Love it's that the ending seems a bit pat. One wonders how Gilbert would have managed to wind it all up if she hadn't stumbled into her own little Cinderella story.

I loved this book...I feel like I could relate to the author on a lot of different levels. I will say that when she gets to her trip to India, the book starts slowing down and you start losing interest. But if you can rally through it you'll enjoy it.
Absolutely Love this book!
This was such an awsome book! I could totatlly see myself doing some of these things.
I really loved this book. I reminded me of a lot of things!!! It makes you think about your own life!

I had very low expectations going into this one given all the hype, but it was better than I thought! OK there are some parts that are corny including the fact that the author was financially well-off to be able to indulge in such a journey and take a lengthy sabbatical; but for anyone who has been through some downturns and tried to willfully understand things and move on, there are some very inspiring tales here. The writing is simple, approachable and humorous. The author is honest and human and makes a great deal to connect with the humanity in all of us. Fabulous stuff!

I loved the woman for writing this thing and I realize I'm being hard on the rating... it probably should get at least 3 stars because I really did enjoy it (some of it I enjoyed profoundly) However, the first third was strong and it was downhill from there, with just brief glimmers of strength the rest of the way. Kinda feels like she hurried in the writing of the last two-thirds.

This is a life-changing book... at least the first two-thirds, anyway. The last third, unfortuately, seemed to meander for me. It was without the power of the first two sections, and the sole reason why this doesn't get five stars. I will probably buy it for myself, though, just to re-read the first two sections. (You should definitely read this book, just be prepared to deflate a bit at the end.)
Italy and India were the most life-changing book chapters I have ready in years. Unfortunately, I got lost in Bali and thus lost interest. I finished it, but out of resentment at what the book had become.

I swear Gilbert was reading my mind when she wrote this ... that or we're some kind of twins displaced in time and space ... amazing book! I am so jealous of her wonderful adventures.
This is the most amazing book! I swear the author lives in my head! And her choice of countries ... wow! She lived my dream and wrote about it exquisitely. So many beautiful sayings and descriptions.

Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings. And once you have achieved a state of happiness, you must never become lax about maintaining it, you must make a mighty effort to keep swimming upward into that happiness forever, to stay afloat on top of it.

That's one part of the book that I like. This book is a story about a woman traveling the world to find her own happiness and get over her broken heart.
It has really deep meaning and we can learn a lot from it.
The first place she visited was Rome, Italy. Where she learned Italian and enjoyed every delicious food there that she gained about 23 pounds.
The she went to an Ashram in India where she learned Yoga and meditation. Here she find how to communicate well with God.
The last place she went was Bali, Indonesia. Where she learned another meditation method from a medicine man, make friendship with a Balinese woman and find love again from a Brazilian man
