Like others, I'm torn. The book was so easy to read, and the form and language was simply beautiful. It was, as writing, unbelievable and a joy to read. But even though the words were so magnificently strung together, it takes more than that for me to call it one of the best. The story was simple, and though it was a moving exploration of wonderful characters, I found myself, after it was done, wanting more, but in a disappointed way, not a positive way. It was a day in the life of several people, and it fostered a sense of bonding with the characters; a sense that there, but for the grace of God, go I. It also gave what seems a poignant depiction of the emotions and the guilt of war for its participants, victims, and observers, but there was a sense that the book could have been more than it was.Still, a wonderful read, recommended for anybody.

Very good character development - the strong point of the book. It tells a story of both hopefulness and hopelessness in wartime. However, it can really get depressing.

wow. a harrowing book that i flew through because the writing was so poignant, so crisp. i love how galloway grounds you into the memorable characters' lives as well as the beleaguered city's. impressive storytelling.

A book which should bring shame on all our so called elected governments especiialy my English one that we should stand by why atrocities like these happened so close to out doorstep..A brilliant book..Read it and weep.

Normally, I wouldn't like a book with an ending that doesn't really tie up all of the loose ends, but in this case, I didn't care because the book was so good. At the same time though, it was pretty sad to realise the hardships of living in wartime.

This is not an uplifting book. I liked getting to know four different characters in a historical setting that I don't know much about. It makes me want to read more about this part of history.
