Struggled with the language but enjoyed the book nonetheless - I had already seen the movie years ago so knew the story line. I still cried at the end. Am now watching the movie again.

Womanist literature of such depth has got me hooked! The triumph at the end of Celie..and tghe portrayal of strong womyn in tghis book is inspiring to many. A Fantastic read!

If you haven't read this book, read it immediately. If you have and you didn't cry, you are officially dead and probably not reading that much any more. Beautiful, beautiful story.

JUST WONDERFUL!!! I two copies of the movie also, and this is just my absolute favorite book.. I honestly learn something everytime I read and watch it... Sunshine

The story of two sisters seperated by cruelty who end up on very different journeys to self discovery.Thankfully they are brought back together by an act of kindness no one would have ever seen coming. Celie is an incredibly resilent character. I love this book.

I know mainstream readers think this is a classic and a must read, but I found it quite crude and heavy. I think the ideas and feelings of the book could have been conveyed just as effectively using different choices of words and descriptions.

The whole book is a collection of letters, whether they be to God or between Celie and her sister Nettie, and they read like a diary which I found easy to read. My first impression after reading only a few pages, was how primitive the characters appeared to be, and they are in many ways, but they're also wonderfully uncomplicated and honest. The letters from Africa were fascinating and we learn in an interesting and very real way how the African people themselves played a part in slavery. We also gain an understanding of the frustration and injustice of how land and tribes were desecrated in the name of 'improvement' and industry.

It was a great depiction of the hardships endured by the African-American women of the South. It had very simple diction, but its simplicity made the imagery more vivid. This book is more appropriate for older readers, since there are depictions of incest,domestic abuse,racial epithets, and a homosexual relationship. If you've seen the movie,the book is very close to it.

A woman reclaims herself as a person, who could want more This is definatly one of hte best books I ever have and probably ever will read. i couldnt put it down. have some tissues next to you as you read this heart-breaking and warming story.

This has just become my favorite book of all time. It was incredibly well written, but hard to follow at times because of the dialect Alice Walker so skillfully uses. I loved the ending, and especially how Walker incorporates the title into the book. A very well written novel.

Ok! So I finally read the book. I think I started it years ago- as a kid. Probably not a good idea back then. But I recently read it through and found that it was easier to read than to watch. The movie's focus is quite different from that of the book. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Again, not for everyone!

I see the anticipation of Morrison's Bluest Eye. Incest. Rape. Trade. Slavery. Domestic Violence. Dichotomy. Oppression. Men turn to cigarettes, women to each other. Is there the sisterhood feminists hope for, or expedient lesbian relationship which is at best a compromise? Thank the Lord 'Pa' is only her step-pa. Men and wives are resolved by age, but the racial conflict seems to last till the end of time -- Missionaries certainly will despair... Jesus: God creates men. Salvation comes only through God. Hopeless men mess themselves up because of original sin, because you're born. Buddha: There is no creator, but Nothingness. Everyone shares the possibility towards enlightenment, as long as you quest for the inner path. Nietzsche: God is dead. Shug: God has no color, shape or sex. It creates coz it like every man wants to be loved. It is in everything.
