This book is so sharp. It was before 1984 and it still is. The painting of the character and especially the whole setting of the mood in this book with a such a deep gloom. It is as if you are compelled to live in that society too. No heroes and no glory but still so very human. And still as modern as it was when published.

This is definitely one of the best books I have ever read. I could not put it down. The story and characters stay with you for a while after.

Sorry Charlie - Winston was a misogynist. George Orwell may have had some issues with women. The Julia character to some degree, was just another man. In fact, she was more so than he because there was only one point in the book at which Winston became decidedly soft -- looking out the window at the "beautiful" woman.

The ONLY interesting theme about the book was Winston's acknowledgment that even when man realizes his inept ability to fight the reality of the rewards of sin he still grovels in it. Isn't his other book about pigs? Uh hello.
