Good read, but at times little boring due to unnecessary exaggeration..

The Name of the Rose is an excellent murder mystery set in a monastery. This monastery's main function was the copying of books - back when all books were hand-copied, sometimes including lavish illustrations and taking multiple persons years to complete.

Needless to say, the extensive, priceless library atop the monastery adds a guarded mystique to the tale. This is the setting, and the plot is pleasingly complex, including philosophical mental tangents for the main character (that I was surprised to find myself intrigued to digest). I give it 'five stars'!

Remarkable for its depth - like a textbook. Glad I had the companion book, too, for translations of the Latin phrases. Intense, dense reading. Not for a casual reader. This one took me several weeks!

This was such a good book. It's very long and get tedious in parts but it is very well written and has such a good storyline. It's like Sherlock Holmes with Monks. The best part is the ending, and it is beyond worth it to get there.

This book blew me away. It did what every great book does. First, it engages you on the level of storytelling. It is, at its most basic level, a murder mystery. But it's also historical fiction. Eco fleshes out the historical era by showing the political significance of the monastery as it existed at the intersection of religious and secular authority. But Eco also paints a picture of the era's internal landscape by describing how the narrator filtered the perceived world through Medieval logic. Eco also uses his story to convey a nature of meaning. By showing the inability to impose a text-like narrative on reality to find meaning, Eco foreshadows the nature of thought in the Modern world. A great book.
